The Handmade Sewing Kit

This workshop meets two Wednesdays, January 22 and 29, 2025, 1-4 pm both sessions.

Sew and decorate your own portable sewing kit in the style of a Northern Swedish marsma or sypåse with folk artist Natalie Norman. This modern style sewing tool caddy is a common needlework project in Sweden and is a practical tool for anyone who practices hand stitching on the go. While older designs of these kits drew closely from the efficient construction of portable Sami sewing kits, the pattern was shared, adapted, and modified over time across Northern Swedish communities and now is typically made in wool with many options for further personalization and embellishment. Students will work on adding patchwork and embroidered embellishments to make their kits their own. This class is appropriate for all levels of hand sewers, but if you are less experienced you may not finish the project in class. Suitable for ages 18+.

A $10 materials fee is paid to the instructor and covers project materials. Students should bring their own fabric shears, a thimble and/or magnification if you use it.
