Lecture: Swedish Bonadsmålning

Join folk artist Pieper Fleck Bloomquist to learn about bonadsmålning, a narrative style of folk painting from southern Sweden. Sometimes referred to as Jultepeter or “Christmas Wallpapers,” bonadsmålning flourished in Småland and Halland during the 18th and 19th centuries, where many farmhouses were beautifully decorated with painted bonads. Inspired by medieval tapestries and church art, these paintings were full of charming (and sometimes comical!) biblical and allegorical stories. Drawing on her studies and travels in Sweden, Pieper will discuss who painted them, how the artists chose the themes, and how they were used as decoration. A bonad painter herself, Pieper will also share her own work which incorporates contemporary stories into this centuries-old folk art. This lecture will prove to be fun and fascinating for anyone interested in art history or learning more about Swedish folk painting.
