Sámi Environmental Philosophy with Dr. Áila O’Loughlin

Join this three-part lecture series to get an introduction to Sámi philosophy with Dr. Áila O’Loughlin. Discuss Sámi metaphysics, worldviews, and questions in practical environmental ethics—such as the moral obligation to so-called ‘natural objects’ such as water and rocks, natural resource stewardship, the green transition, language, and identity. The Sámi (asa: Saami, Same) are an Indigenous people of the Arctic Circle who reside across four political borders of Norway, Sweden, Finland, and the Kola Peninsula of Russia. The semi-autonomous nation of Sámi people is called Sápmi. Each class has a corresponding reading by Sámi and/or Sámi-American philosophers—materials provided by the instructor.
