Workshop: Carve a Swedish Style Dough Bowl

This class runs at the Fireweed Community Woodshop Friday, June 23 and Saturday, June 24 from 9 am-5 pm and Sunday, June 25 from 9 am-2 pm. The class finishes at the American Swedish Institute on Sunday afternoon for a gathering with other students from the other weekend classes with Sätergläntan instructors.

Join Beth Moen, a lead instructor from Sätergläntan Institute for Craft’s woodworking program, for a weekend of carving a Swedish-style dough bowl. Beth travels to us from Dalarna, Sweden, where she teaches in the three year wood working curriculum. In this three day class, Beth will walk students through the process of carving a bowl using traditional green wood working techniques. Starting with a log, students will split, hollow and shape their bowl using hand tools, including axes, adzes, scorps, spokeshaves, and gouges. After shaping their bowl, students will take them home to dry and finish with oil or paint. This style of bowl would have been previously used for mixing bread dough but will serve as a useful centerpiece or serving bowl for all kinds of food or other items.

Previous green wood carving experience is helpful to be successful in this course; the ability to stand for long periods and work physically with one’s arms and hands is required. Suitable for students ages 18+. All tools and materials ($50 value) are included in the class fee, but if you have your own tools, please indicate that at check out.

This class is an extraordinary opportunity to work with an instructor from one of Sweden’s premier institutions for handcraft learning. This June, four instructors from the four core programs (hand sewing, weaving, woodworking and blacksmithing) at Sätergläntan will teach across Minneapolis over one weekend. On the final day of class, all classes will gather at ASI, to meet the other instructors and students and share what they have learned. Limited full scholarships are available to cover this class’s tuition with a priority deadline of March 19, 2023; learn more and apply here.
