Introduction to Handsewn Leatherwork

This program is sold out. Please call 612-871-4907 to be added to a waitlist.

This class meets Saturday-Sunday, February 15–16, 10 am–5 pm both days.

Explore the process of leatherwork as you make a clutch bag/notebook case and additional small items such as a glasses case and snap purse, as time allows. Basic design considerations, how to choose leather hides, and how to care for leather will be covered. Beth will lead students through how to use a traditional two-needle saddle stitch to sew natural, un-dyed cowhide by hand with waxed linen thread. Surface decoration, pattern stamping, and basic hardware applications will also be discussed. The vegetable tanned cowhide used will gradually turn a rich honey color, and the leather goods you make will last decades with some basic care, growing even more beautiful over time.

Prerequisites:

Physical ability: Moderate hand strength is required for sewing leather, and enough shoulder strength to use a mallet.
Skill level: Open to all skill levels.
Ages: Suitable for ages 16+.

Tools and Materials:

A $80 materials fee is payable to the instructor in class. This covers the cost of leather materials for several projects, as well as thread, hardware, adhesives, leather care, and tool use. Please bring magnification (e.g. cheater glasses) if you typically need them.
