A little glitter sparkles, but a lot shines! That’s the principle behind grannlåtsbroderi, a traditional Swedish embroidery technique that can be translated to “finery embroidery,” which celebrates opulence and splendor through accessible materials. Join visiting Swedish teaching artist Emma Ewadotter for this one-day deep dive into this colorful technique, which has been used to brighten homes and clothing since the 1800s. Students will work on a wool sampler to learn the basic techniques, including decorative stitching, applique, and incorporating all glittering notions, from sequins to beads. Throughout the class, Emma will also share the history and context of this embroidery technique and how she has explored embroidery in work as a textile artist in Umeå, Sweden. This class is open to all experience levels.
