Introduction to Acanthus Design

This class runs four Tuesdays, February 6-27, 1-3:30 pm each session.

Norwegian-style acanthus carvings are familiar to many appreciators of traditional Norwegian buildings, wooden ware, and other folk art – but before you can carve it, you have to be able to draw it! Join woodcarver Jock Holmen for a four-week class to learn the basic “alphabet” of Norwegian carving. Understanding how larger decorative carvings can be broken into individual components allows anyone to approach a new project with both precision and creativity. Once students have the building blocks of various scrolls, students will practice putting them together into an original combination. This class is open to woodcarvers who would like to start acanthus carving, acanthus carvers who want a back-to-basics approach to design work, and anyone who wants to dig deeper into folk art design, whether they intend to carve or not.

Please note, that this class is drawing based, using examples provided by the instructor. Students will need to provide a pad of tracing paper (e.g. Blick Tracing Paper 11 x 14, item 10609-3005 or similar) and #2 pencils/eraser (e.g. Staedtler Mars plastic eraser or similar). Suitable for ages 18+.
