Intro to Tapestry Weaving

This class runs six Wednesdays, February 21-March 27, 2024, from 5-7 pm central time each session.

Curious about tapestry weaving and ready to try out pictorial weaving? This six-week class invites students to transform yarn into a peaceful sunset landscape (approx. 10”x10”) while learning foundational weaving techniques. Starting with a simple frame loom that can be kept after class for future projects, students will work step by step alongside instructor Laura Berlage. Students will cover both horizontal and angled forms, beginning with foundational geometrics and building into more naturalistic shapes, while also covering cartoon creation and shading. Throughout the class, instruction will focus on establishing good techniques for further weaving, while discussions will cover the rich history and creative possibilities of this ancient textile form. This class welcomes students of all experience levels.

This is a live virtual class taught over Zoom. Students need a strong internet connection and a device with video capabilities.

Kits ($110 value) are included in the class fee. Each kit includes a frame loom, yarn, and all the tools needed to get started weaving. Kits will be available for pick up at the American Swedish Institute starting February 8, or can be shipped for an additional $15 fee. Registration for this kit-based class closes on February 5 or whenever sold out.
