Intro to Spinning on a Wheel

This class runs Saturday and Sunday, October 4-5, from 10 am-5 pm both days.

Spinning on a wheel is an enduring historical craft that is at once challenging and relaxing. This skill is inextricably tied to the creation of fabric and textiles and offers an excellent basis for any textile artists who want to take their practice to the next level by spinning their own fiber! During class, students will have the opportunity to try a variety of wheel designs to discover what suits them best. Discuss the basics of fiber preparation, such as how to wash wool and use combs, hand, and drum carder. Fibers covered include bast fiber as well as a range of wools. As time allows, textile artist Josie Cooke will also provide guidance on ways to finish yarn, how to ply, and the multitude of uses for freshly spun yarn!
