Flat Plane Carved Ornaments

Try your hand at carving while creating unique wooden ornaments to spruce up your holiday tree! This beginner-level carving course with Maeve Gathje will introduce students to the tradition of Scandinavian-style flat plane carving, including basic knife grips and carving techniques. Students will choose from a selection of pre-cut shapes and use a carving knife to add details and character to each design. Students should expect to take home four ornaments that can be painted or oiled after class, and then displayed or gifted. This class is the perfect way to connect with family over the holidays and maybe even start a new tradition. Open to ages 16 and up, or ages 11-15 welcome to register alongside an accompanying adult.

Some experience with woodcarving (such as previous short ASI woodcarving class) is suggested but not required. Woodcarving requires good hand strength and flexibility. A $20 materials fee is paid to the instructor in class and covers all tools and materials. Finishing options such as painting or oiling will also be discussed in class.
