Chip Carving Basics

This class runs Saturday, July 15, 9 am-5 pm and Sunday, July 16, 9 am-1 pm.

Explore the technique of chip carving in the Scandinavian style. Chip carving is an old and useful form of decoration for woodenware of all kinds, including bowls, plates, spoons and decorative boxes or signs. With decoration and plenty of attention from instructors Paul Anderson and Mike Hughes, students will practice a set of basic chip carving cuts on a practice board before working on a coaster. Tool options and care, wood and pattern selection and preparation, and finishing of projects will all be covered, allowing students to feel confident in tackling an entire project on their own after class.

Students should provide their own chip carving knife (suggested style: Pfeil Swiss chip carving knife #2) and bring a leather strop for sharpening in class. A $15 materials fee covers all other materials.

Please note, carving requires good hand strength and flexibility to complete a project. Suitable for ages 18+.
