Capture the likeness of your dog in miniature and carve away the afternoon! Students will choose from various wood blanks resembling different dog breeds and carve and paint their very own dog while getting an introduction to woodcarving in the Scandinavian flat-plane tradition. The course is ideal for beginners and especially encouraged for adults and youth ages 11-15 to take together. Over four hours, students will work with carving instructor Matt Bruch to transform a simple basswood block into a delightful look-a-like of their pet. The group will practice several knife grips to safely and effectively shape the wood and learn techniques for applying paint and a wax finish to bring our dogs to life. Students will select the template that suits their dog best from the nine options provided at registration.

Prerequisites:

Physical ability: Average hand strength and dexterity are required to be successful in this style of woodcarving.

Skill level: Open to all skill levels.

Ages: Suitable for ages 11-15 registered alongside an adult, ages 16+ may attend independently.

Tools & Materials:

A $10 materials fee is due to the instructor in class to cover materials and tool use. This covers the first blank and tool use. Students may purchase additional blanks for $5 each (maximum of three blanks per student). Students are encouraged to bring their own carving knife and safety glove, or they may borrow a set from ASI.

Please Note: Students must select their dog template(s) from the options provided at registration. Please see the attachment for template options. Registration closes May 19 to allow time for materials prep or whenever sold out.
