Learn to carve a charming little Jultomte for yourself or a loved one, just like the folkloric figure seen throughout ASI’s 75th Annual Holiday Experience, Tomte Tales: Legends of Winter. In this intergenerational class, youth and adult pairs each bring a whimsical Jultomte (Santa Claus figure) to life just in time for the holidays. Students will work alongside instructor Matt Bruch to transform a simple basswood block into a carved and painted Jultomte, all while learning a bit about the folkloric creature in the Jultomten stories. Using traditional Scandinavian flat-plane carving techniques, we will practice several knife grips to safely and effectively shape the wood, and then learn techniques for applying paint and a finish. Complete your project by attaching a cord to turn your Jultomte into an ornament suitable for hanging on a tree or as a gift! Students may have time for multiple Jultomtar; additional blanks will be available for purchase.
Intergenerational program: This program is for one kid and one adult to attend together, and each work on their own projects. Please reach out if you wish to confirm available space for additional children to attend with a registered adult.
Physical ability: Average hand strength and dexterity are required to be successful in this style of woodcarving.
Skill level: Open to all skill levels. This course specially suits new carvers.
Ages: This program is for children ages 11-17 and an adult.
A $10 materials fee is due to the instructor in class to cover each project; additional blanks may be purchased for $5 per blank. Students are encouraged to bring their own carving knife and safety glove, or they may borrow a set from ASI.
