Carve a Chickadee

This program is sold out. Please call 612-871-4907 to be added to a waitlist. There’s an additional session for this class on January 14 with spots available

Who is that at the feeder on this cold frosty morning?  Chick-a-dee-dee-dee!  Well, of course it is a Chickadee! These Minnesota year-round residents bring song, cheer and joy to our yards. In one afternoon this winter, beginning students can carve and paint their own chickadee while getting an introduction to woodcarving in the Scandinavian flat-plane tradition. The course is ideal for beginners and especially encouraged for adults and youth ages 11–14 to take together. Over four hours, students will work with instructor Matt Bruch to transform a simple basswood block into a carved and painted chickadee. We will practice several knife grips to safely and effectively shape the wood and also learn techniques for applying paint and a wax finish.

Please note, this style of woodcarving requires average hand strength and dexterity. Suitable for students ages 15+, or ages 11–14 accompanied by a registered adult.

A $10 materials fee is due to the instructor in class to cover all materials. Students are encouraged to bring their own carving knife and safety glove, or they may borrow a set from ASI.
