ASI Open Nordic Jam

Ever wanted to play music in the historic Turnblad Mansion? Now’s your chance! Bring your nyckelharpa, hardingfele, fiddle, or any acoustic instrument to ASI’s Open Nordic Jam. This session welcomes musicians of all levels who are eager to learn and play Nordic folk music. Whether you’re bringing friends or planning to make new ones, all are welcome!

Minnesota has a rich musical heritage, shaped by its many immigrant communities. From Nisswa-stämman to the Nordic Roots Festival and countless house jams, Nordic folk music is a vital part of the state’s musical identity. Whether you’re a seasoned fiddler or curious to learn more about this tradition, this monthly gathering is for you!

Facilitated by ASI staff, the jam is a collaborative experience where musicians select tunes in the room. We’ll play both standards and originals, drawing from Swedish, Norwegian, Finnish, Danish, and Icelandic folk traditions. While many bring traditional instruments, all acoustic instrumentalists are welcome to join. If you don’t play an instrument, you’re still invited to attend, respectfully observe, and listen. Dancing is encouraged but not required. See you there!
