Advanced Scandinavian Spoon Carving

This class meets over eight Wednesdays, April 9–May 28, 6:30–9 pm each week.

Build your spoon carving skills in this 8-week course with master woodworker Paul Linden. This class uses spoons and other small projects to explore intermediate and advanced techniques of woodworking in the spirit of slöjd, the Swedish handcraft tradition of creating beautiful and functional objects. Students with existing green wood carving experience will build skills with traditional hand tools and green wood, and also cover tool maintenance/sharpening, acquiring materials, and design and embellishment.

Prerequisites:

  • Physical ability: Students must have good hand strength and flexibility to be successful with the materials.
  • Skill level: This class is suitable for students who have already done some spoon carving, such as previously taking one or more multi-day spoon carving courses or have carved a good number of spoons on their own and are looking to increase their skills. This course is not appropriate for students without previous axe work or green woodcarving experience. Students are working in green wood in this class and must have good hand strength and flexibility to be successful with the materials.
  • Ages: Suitable for ages 16+.

Tools and Materials:

A $50 materials fee is paid to the instructor during the first week, which covers all the tools and materials for the entire course. Students are welcome to bring their favorite carving tools.
