Advanced Scandinavian Bowl Carving

This class meets for 8 sessions on Wednesdays, January 8 through February 26, from 6:30-9 pm each session.

Build your skills carving your own small bowls in the Scandinavian green wood tradition, using fresh cut wood, axes and gouges. Over 8 sessions, Paul Linden will lead students through the process of selecting the raw material, preparing blanks, shaping the bowls with hand tools and a variety of approaches to finishing. Appropriate tool selection, shop set up, sharpening and design principles will also be discussed throughout class. By the end, students will have one or more small bowls, perfect for cereal, ice cream and more.

A $50 materials fee is payable to Paul at the beginning of class and covers all tools and materials for the entire course. Considerable hand strength and flexibility is required, and this class is suitable for students who already have green woodcarving experience, such as taking several multi-day classes or previously carved spoons, bowls, or other green wood items and who are looking to increase their skills. Students may also wish to bring their own favorite carving tools. Suitable for ages 16+.
